Costume Design

Aida

Aida, written by Giuseppe Verdi, is a play of tragic love, intense scenes, and drama!

Designing for the Grand Rapids Opera was an exciting experience. As a team of three it was up to us to design and create two ensembles matching the theme, style, and correct time period from the play.

Primary Sketches
Final Concept Sketches

My group and I worked on the character costume of Aida. We sketched concepts for an easy and clean design. Our goal was to create clothing from Ancient Egypt, in the way that they would have constructed it.

We also created pieces with sustainability in mind! Like the head piece which was made using bottle tabs. and the head band using an old soda can.

Our second character costume was Radames, Aida's lover in the play. For Radames we had to create a solider. We used green/gold as a sign of his royal guard position.

For his armor we stayed true to the sustainable elements and used the pop tabs again for Radame's chest plate, resembling chain-mail.
